The Surprising Step You Should Take to Find Your Next Job Opportunity

The Surprising Step You Should Take to Find Your Next Job OpportunityThe Surprising Step You Should Take to Find Your Next Job Opportunity Between the new opportunities, colleagues and environment, starting a new job is often an exciting time. Whats not so exciting? The job search process itself. I have yet to meet a person who actually enjoys scouring open job listings, vetting companies and coordinating interview times (or worse - hearing radio silence from the companies theyve applied to). If there were a quick and easy way to streamline the process, most job seekers would take advantage of it in a heartbeat. But the truth is, there is a simple way to streamline your job search, and at no out-of-pocket cost to you. Its just that many people arent aware of it. Working with a staffing services firm can ease or even eliminate many of the biggest job search pain points. To get the details on how it all works, I chatted with Ryan Lynch, a Client Relationship Executiv e at Kforce .Once you make contact with a staffing services firm, whether you reach out to them or they reach out to you, youll have a recruiter assigned to you whose entire job is to connect you with the right opportunities. The nice parte about working with a staffing services firm is that you are essentially crowdsourcing your job search efforts. I talk to enough people who are looking for a job to know that most find it to be a scary proposition, because theres no defined roadmap. When youre looking at different job postings you see different titles, different job descriptions and sometimes it just gets confusing. Thats where we come in, Lynch says.Recruiters will work with you to figure out what youre looking for and why, Lynch says. For example, Do you like the flexibility of contract work? Are you looking for a more permanent placement?Once we decide what path you need to take or where you want to go with your career, you suddenly have multiple associates throughout the fir m actively advocating on your behalf with our clients, Lynch explains. Plus, we arent just putting your resume in a portal - were having face-to-face conversations with the managers who have the ability to hire you . A firm like ours has access to more than 50 years of rich history and relationships throughout the country that you get to build upon. From there, your recruiter will identify interested companies, coordinate interviews and even help you polish your resume if needed. Most companies will help you write your resume as part of their services. When I meet with a candidate, I see it as part of my job to sit down with them and work on their resume with a critical eye, Lynch shares.Another benefit of working with a staffing agency is that you continue to receive support even after youve found and accepted the right job for you.The minute you accept that offer , youre going to get onboarding emails and youre introduced to our consultant care program. We have a portal which rea lly acts as a home base for anything you need related to your placement, whether it be payroll, benefits, additional training or resources to reach out to, Lynch says.Beyond that, staffing services firms are committed to keeping touch with you even after youve started your new job in order to ensure that youre getting everything you need.To me, consultants are the lifeblood of everything that we do, and I truly believe we embrace that idea as a company. Sometimes people are surprised by the consistent follow-up they experience once they become a consultant. We have a structured process where the recruiter who helped you find that job will be there to support you throughout the assignment, Lynch explains.Often, recruiters will meet you on-site on your first day to walk you in, set you up for the project and introduce you to the team. From there, theyll check in at least every couple of weeks and provide consultant events quarterly and ongoing training. Recruiters will even reach out to your employer to make sure that your experience is going as well as it possibly can.On the client side, we check in regularly to ensure things are going well and to gather feedback which we can share with the consultant, Lynch says.Because not everybody is familiar with staffing services firms, there are often myths and misconceptions around how they operate. One of the biggest is that you, the job seeker, have to pay them for their services. But in fact, staffing services firms revenue comes from their clients - the employers looking to fill positions. If someone is asking you to pay for their service, its a red flag and you should look elsewhere, Lynch cautions.Another prevalent misconception job seekers have is that firms only offer short-term assignments. However, most of our business is actually geared toward long-term engagements, either in project work or contract-to-hire, Lynch says. As companies are transforming their technology or their business, a lot of times they want to retain the people who helped them build their system and have the institutional knowledge. Also, I often hear the assumption that we just sling resumes and that couldnt be further from the truth. The intent is always to form lasting personal relationships whether that be to help you find a permanent job or if you want to deploy from assignment to assignment, Lynch adds. Thats what most good firms are searching for - people who want to have a mutually beneficial relationship to help them achieve their career goals while solving problems for our clients.Want to take your job search to the next level? What IT Wont Tell You About Workplace Security

What IT Wont Tell You About Workplace SecurityWhat IT Wont Tell You About Workplace Security From elections being hacked to a rogue ransomware that managed to infect hundreds of thousands of computers across 150 countries in a matter of days, its hard to tune into the news these days without hearing about some form of hacking or security issue. As we come to rely on the internet for more - for commerce, politics, and social activities - you can be assured that the bad guys will keep getting sophisticated in their attempts to compromise your security. Not that things arent bad already - they are (as we revealed on TheBestVPN , there were 4,100 security breaches, resulting in 4.2 billion stolen and exposed personal records, in 2016 alone).Unfortunately, the role employees play in facilitating these security issues is elendlage small - the renowned eBay hack in which hackers stole data of 145 million eBay users was as a result of three key eBay employees being c ompromised, and the recent WannaCry malware that is spreading in unprecedented proportions started with just one person on a network opening the wrong attachment, which then automatically spreads to all computers on a network. IT would really love for you to play a more active role in security. They really want you to know these facts, but they dont know how to tell you1. Even With Your Antivirus and a Secure Password Manager, You Can Still be HackedTo the average web user, once you have a very reliable antivirus application and a good password manager, nothing could go wrong. After all, the antivirus automatically screens everything that goes through your computer and the password manager automatically generate passwords - using a combination of strange characters - that you couldnt have imagined in a million years. IT would really like you to know that this does not make your security sacrosanct . In fact, the way things are setup to day, most malware and exploits are deliver ed through the web and email, and your firewall already allows these two mediums (otherwise you wont really be able to use the internet). Experts have also found that most password managers are not as secure as many will expect them to be. In fact, the team at TeamSIK analyzed all of the top password managers and made the following conclusion The overall results were extremely worrying and revealed that password manager applications, despite their claims, do not provide enough protection mechanisms for the stored passwords and credentials. Instead, they abuse the users confidence and expose them to high risks. This doesnt mean you shouldnt use an antivirus and a password manager. You should, because not using them could be much more dangerous. However, you should use them alongside other security measures.2. It Sucks to Update Your Device, but Its One of the Most Effective Forms of Protection Against Being Hacked The most recent ransomware making the rounds now is WannaCry, a rans omware that took down hundreds of thousands of computers in 150 countries in a matter of days the ransomware works by searching for and encrypting 176 different file types and asking users to pay $300 to have their files decrypted. If payment isnt made within three days, the amount requested will be doubled. If payment is not made within seven days, the files will be deleted.Whats interesting about WannaCry and many other types of ransomware is how they spread WannaCry spreads by exploiting a critical vulnerability in Windows computers it then uses this vulnerability to spread across computers on the same network - in other words, youre likely to be infected once a computer on your organization network is infected. The interesting fact about WannaCry, as well as most other forms of malware, is that they usually target weak and vulnerable computers, and they are most effective if you havent updated your computer in a long time. Microsoft already released a fix to the vulnerability t he WannaCry ransomware exploited two months before the ransomware came out, yet hundreds of thousands of people were affected because they havent updated their computer.IT wants you to know that as much as you hate to update your computer, it will really save you and them a lot of worries and money.3. Backups are Boring, Yes, But You Cant Live Without ThemThe biggest threat to any organization is data loss, and IT just cant wait to emphasize this enough to you. When you really think about it, the majority of the exploits and ransomware making the rounds these days are all doing the same thing withholding your data and threatening to delete it if you do not meet their demands. Now, it would be interesting to realize that it doesnt necessarily take a hacker to destroy your data hard drives naturally fail, and data loss occasionally occursnaturally. In fact, research shows that hard drive crashes and hardware problems are responsible for 66 percent of data loss - in essence, your hard drive is more likely to crash than you are to be hacked. Even Google is not immune the 2015 natural disaster, in which lightning struck one of Googles data centers in Belgium, and wiped data from some of its disks - resulting in permanent loss of some data - quickly comes to mind.If you dont back up already, IT cant wait to tell you just how important it is to back up. More importantly, they cant wait to tell you how essential it is to back up to more than one source.4. Bringing Your Own Device is Not As Safe as You Think it IsIT really doesnt want to infringe on your freedom or restrict you, but bringing your own device isnt exactly as safe as youd imagine. Going back to the point we looked at earlier on about how antiviruses and password managers are not enough for securing your computer, bringing your own devices (BYOD) automatically increases the security risks of your employer.Research shows, that in organizations that have a BYOD policy, 80 percent of BYOD is completely unmanaged, and 77 percent of employees do not know the risks that come with using their own devices in the workplace. If your workplace has a good security team, your personal devices are not nearly as safe as the companys device. If you bring your own device, take more active measures to ensure your device is safe - better yet, reach out to someone in IT to know what you should know about accessing the company network with your device.John Mason is a tech and internet security expert as well as partner at TheBestVPN.com , a leading portal that shares information on VPNs and online security.

How Real Women Get Ahead

How Real Women Get Ahead Forget what you heard about being one of the boys, having it all, and going for the jugular. Here is how real women get ahead. Get In LineAccording to Catalysts 2002 Census of Women Corporate Officers and Top Earners, women fill less than ten percent of line positions held by corporate officers and just 5.2% of top earners at Fortune 500 companies are women. Is there a correlation? Absolutely. Half of women executives and 68% of CEOs say that lack of significant line experience holds women back (Catalyst, Women in U.S. Corporate Leadership, 2003).Knowing that line experience is critical, get prepared. Study financial management, become an expert in a functional area such as strategic planning, manufacturing, marketing or sales, serve on a nonprofit or advisory board and, the minute the opportunity arises, take a position with profit and loss responsibility.Learning about t he financials doesnt happen overnight. When Margaret Morford, 50, of Brentwood, Tennessee, was Vice President of Human Resources for a large distribution company, sherecalls, I took the saatkorn finance for non-financial managers course three times until I got it. I used that financial knowledge to demonstrate Human Resources impact to the bottom line. Once I started speaking in numbers, the senior managers in my peer group began to view Human Resources as a business partner rather than an administrative drain on revenues.Remember Who You AreIn 2005, The Center for Work/Life Policy asked women what they want in the workplace. Seventy-nine percent of women said the freedom to be myself at work. Ask a man if he desires to be himself at work, and you will probably get the same glassy stare I got when I asked my husband that question. But when I asked women leaders, I heard stories like the one my friend, Pam Judd, age 55, shared. Shortly after she began working for Levis, Pam was advis ed by her boss and peers that if she wanted to get ahead, she shouldnt be so nice. The essential Pam is a very nice rolle caring, empathetic, someone who remembers every event in her friends and familys lives with a card or a phone call. Pam ignored that early advice, made the decision to be herself, and stayed the course. Now, 35 years later, she is a sales director, one of the top female leaders in her company, and still nice.Communicate Superbly Almost fifty percent of women executives cite developing a style with which male managers are comfortable as critical to success (Catalyst, Women in U.S. Corporate Leadership, 2003).Dr. Pat Heim, author of Invisible Rules Men, Women and Teams, writes women often use hedges, disclaimers and tag questions in their speech to involve the other person and maintain the all-important relationship in female culture. When men hear this, they incorrectly assume a woman either does notlage know what she is talking about, or that she is insecure abo ut her ideas.Lisa Steiner, age 46, Vice President, Brown-Forman Corporation, Louisville, Kentucky, says In my experience, women who regularly ask for advice and are tentative are viewed as needy not the best perception if your goal is to reach the top. Steiner adds, It has taken me years to refine my decision-making skills but now I have learned not to second guess myself.Flaunt Your Skills Not Your SexualityMaria Xenidou, age 35, Senior Associate, National Starch Chemical Company, Bridgewater, New Jersey, follows the advice of a mentor who told her never to answer a senior persons query, How are you? with Fine. Instead, she says, I give a one sentence update on what I am working on or a recent challenge I mastered. By doing so, I keep upper management up-to-date about my career and what might have been a quick hello in the hall often turns into a longer conversation. And, highly successful women know not to flirt, swear or be the brde one at the bar. A 2005 study by Tulane Univers ity found that women who send flirtatious e-mail, wear short skirts, cross their legs provocatively or massage a mans shoulders at work win fewer pay raises and promotions. You Cant Have It All If You Do It AllThe biggest hurdle that women have to leap is managing kids and a career. While men also have busy professional and personal lives, women shoulder the majority of household and child care responsibilities and pay the career consequences. According to Catalyst, Workplace Flexibility Isnt Just a Womans Issue, 2003, women are more likely than men toEmploy outside services for domestic helpShare personal responsibilities with a partnerUse childcare servicesRely on supportive relatives other than their partnerCurtail personal interestsSuccessful women plan their careers and dont attempt to do it all. Steiner is married with four children at home. She started her family after completing her education and making a mark in her organization. Says Steiner, I dont attempt to do it all. I delegate a lot of the household chores to make our lives work.Honor The Female AdvantageIn Fast Company, Women and Men, Work and Power, February 1998, Sharon Patrick, President and COO, Martha Stewart Living, is quoted as saying, We cant ignore a 1000000 years of history at the office or in the living room. Men hunt, women gather. A funny but true attribute of the modern hunter is going for the jugular and then inviting you out for a beer afterwards.According to Nicki Joy and Susan Kane-Benson, authors of Selling is a Womans Game, women tend to encourage harmony and agreement, consult with experts, employees and peers before making a decision, and make personal connections with others at work.As more organizations move away from authoritarian values and a rigid hierarchy to a more open, informal, democratic model, being raised as a man is no longer an advantage says John Naisbitt, author of Megatrends. I agree. What do you think?
